Blood pressure (strictly speaking: vascular pressure) refers to the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, and constitutes one of the principal vital signs. The pressure of the circulating blood decreases as blood moves through arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and veins; the term blood pressure generally refers to arterial pressure, i.e., the pressure in the larger arteries, arteries being the blood vessels which take blood away from the heart. Arterial pressure is most commonly measured via a sphygmomanometer, which uses the height of a column of mercury to reflect the circulating pressure (see Non-invasive measurement). Although many modern vascular pressure devices no longer use mercury, vascular pressure values are still universally reported in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The systolic arterial pressure is defined as the peak pressure in the arteries, which occurs near the beginning of the cardiac cycle; the diastolic arterial pressure is the lowest pressure (at the resting phase of the cardiac cycle). The average pressure throughout the cardiac cycle is reported as mean arterial pressure; the pulse pressure reflects the difference between the maximum and minimum pressures measured. Typical values for a resting, healthy adult human are approximately 120 mmHg (16 kPa) systolic and 80 mmHg (11 kPa) diastolic (written as 120/80 mmHg, and spoken as “one twenty over eighty”) with large individual variations. These measures of arterial pressure are not static, but undergo natural variations from one heartbeat to another and throughout the day (in a circadian rhythm); they also change in response to stress, nutritional factors, drugs, or disease. Hypertension refers to arterial pressure being abnormally high, as opposed to hypotension, when it is abnormally low. Along with body temperature, blood pressure measurements are the most commonly measured physiological parameters.
Fungal infections of the nails are common. Fungal infections can also be a problem for people wearing acrylic nails. Fungal nails usually begin with an opaque white or silvery area at the distal (outside) edge of a nail. Onychomycosis usually begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. Fungal infections are not commonly contagious nor do they spread easily between people.

How Is Toenail Fungus Diagnosed?
By: Mandy Fain, Tue Apr 17th, 2007
Toenail fungus is a common problem in this country, especially for people who are involved in athletics or whose occupation requires them to work in damp areas. A nail fungus diagnosis is common in nails that have been continuously exposed to warm, moist environments such as sweaty shoes or shower floors. A nail fungus may present as a yellowish or brown patch on the nail and in some cases could cause the nail to separate from the nail bed.

Nail Fungus Symptoms Will Vary From Person To Person
By: Mandy Fain, Tue Apr 3rd, 2007
The first symptom of a toenail fungus infection is discoloration of the nail. The symptoms of a nail infection will vary depending on the type and severity of the infection.

Nail Fungus
An infection of nail fungus occurs when fungi infect one or more of your nails. A nail fungal infection may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the nail fungus spreads deeper into your nail, it may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges, an unsightly and potentially painful problem. These infections usually develop on nails continually exposed to warm, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or shower floors. Nail fungus isn’t the same as athlete’s foot, which primarily affects the skin of the feet, but at times the two may coexist and can be caused by the same type of fungus. An infection with nail fungus may be difficult to treat, and infections may recur. But medications are available to help clear up nail fungus.

My 6 year old just correctly noted in her book about mom that her mom’s favorite food is salad. Who comes to mind when we think about victims of heart disease? Most times our first thought is of men, but unfortunately, heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women in the United States. Heart disease includes the closing of the arteries that bring oxygen to the heart, heart failure, diseases of the heart muscles, inborn defects, and other conditions. Thousands of American women die each year from heart diseases, and the risks increase as a woman ages.

Whitening (sometimes called “bleaching”) is a common and popular chemical process used to whiten teeth. Some people get their teeth bleached to make stains disappear, while other just want a whiter shade. The active ingredient in most of the whitening agents is 10 percent carbamide peroxide, also known as urea peroxide; when water contacts this white crystal; the release of hydrogen peroxide lightens the teeth.

Today patients have never had more options for whitening their teeth, including over the counter preparations(Whitestrips), in-office light assisted tooth whitening(an hour or two) or using trays made be the dentist to be used at home to gradually lighten and whiten teeth(one to three weeks). It wasn’t always this easy! In the 1980’s in -office light assisted bleaching was an option, but it was more time consuming , took many more sessions and was a much more expensive than it is today.

As rated by American doctors, the most frequent medical problem is depression. It seems patients make appointments because of other symptoms (stomach trouble, sleep problems, allergies), and then the reason for the symptoms turns out to be depression. Typically, doctors then will prescribe anti-depressants - even though the patients come in about other symptoms - and after a few weeks, the symptoms fade and the patient feels more or less okay. Because the doctor is usually a General practice or Internal Medicine physician, he or she will have neither time nor training for much else. As a consequence, drugs are by far the most frequent method for dealing with depression.

Although you may feel that a mild acne condition can be treated on your own, it may be a good idea for you to visit a dermatologist if your skin begins to break out. Your dermatologist will provide you with valuable information on the acne cause as well as options for treatment. Additionally there exists a condition called keratosis pilaris. This condition is often times confused with acne. A dermatologist will be able to determine which condition you are experiencing so you do not waste your time with the wrong types of treatments.

Usually mild acne conditions are treated best by topical acne ointments. More severe cases of acne however need to be treated in a variety of other ways. These include oral antibiotics, prescription ointments, and physical acne treatments such as a chemical acne peel and drainage.
